~A bit about my counselling services~
Offering: Counselling, Art Therapy & More...
Whether through talking or other forms of therapy (such as art therapy) working with a counsellor can open new pathways for going forward.
During counselling sessions I work collaboratively with clients to learn what their goals are, where the challenges are, and then learn what their inner strengths may be. From the very first moments during an intake session, as client's begin to share parts of their life that may help in understanding context, is the beginning of the process of building the therapeutic relationship.
People are complex.
And within this complexity are layers of unique lived experiences that have brought either: challenges and adversity, or resiliency and resourcefulness. Coping behaviours that have been developed as a result of these experiences can either be supportive and healthy, or the opposite.
Part of learning about the areas a client identifies as important factors is also gaining understanding of whether a client is seeking new coping strategies, fine tuning old strategies, or other specifics that they identify as goals for therapy.
In working from a relational framework, I am interested in all aspects of a person: their social, emotional, relational, physical, cognitive and spiritual being. I view each individual person from the lens of their being a complex system that has reached out for support towards alignment.
Attentive listening, authentic presence, and a gentle curiosity towards learning about who each person is that has invited me into their world, and sorting out how I can be the best possible support within my capacity to offer, is a privilege that I take seriously.
I strive to fit therapeutic approaches to each unique person. Meaning that if Response-based therapy is appropriate I may draw elements from that modality, if aspects of CBT may be supportive, I will draw from that modality. Somatic therapy is interlaced with Talk therapy, as I view each person as a whole. My approach is acknowledging that the emotional, cognitive realm and the physical body experiences life events as a whole (interwoven), versus separate, and as such the need is to tend to all aspects of a person.
There are different ways to approach trauma healing and as such I work collaboratively with clients in a very empowering approach to support their healing whether it is through EMDR, Talk, Somatic, or Art Therapy, trauma work is paced differently and this is openly discussed with clients.
To share a bit about art therapy, I will often turn to the nurturing elements found in nature, as there is a vast resource to support healing through connecting with our senses through the natural world. I encourage individuals to reconnect with the natural environment, creating space for re-introducing peace, mindfulness, balance and grounding. Nature being a balm of serenity and calm as a counter-balance to the rapid pace and demands of our global society.
Many find that art therapy is a unique counselling experience that is an embodied process allowing for both verbal and non-verbal expression. Within art therapy there is a continual movement between doing and thinking, expressing and processing, action and receptivity.
Therapy can offer pathways forward to engaging with life more fully, with an invitation to explore and discover the wisdom of the whole self. The therapeutic modalities mentioned all create an opportunity for intentionality of time, where individuals give themselves permission to engage in a dedicated pocket of time of self-care, discovery, healing, and change.
An important note to share about my counselling practice and psychological approach to therapy, is effective for a broad range of areas, however, I do not work with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness or those who need between-session interventions.
