A note about confidentiality and counselling teens.
I feel it is important to mention that involving the parents/guardians in the teen's counselling,
(when it is appropriate) is done with care and collaborative planning with the teen so that their voice and opinions are valued and attended to.
Please note: I practice from a family systems framework where fostering strengthening of communication channels between teens and their parents is an open and collaborative process.
This being said, not everything that the teen discloses in therapy is shared with their parents; this is part of the initial process where we collaborate and create together within the confidentiality agreement, keeping safety as the guidepost.
Providing teens with a safe and supportive environment is key to their being able to engage in open and honest dialogue where they can have their voice heard and valued without judgement or bias.
Counselling for teens can be a preventative measure or as an intervention on concerns that already exist.
