Do You need to have artistic talent?
That is the best part....No artistic talent is needed!
A trained Art Therapist knows artistic materials and processes and supports your use of the materials and processes to remove barriers that may block the beneficial aspects during the therapy session.
Art therapy uses art materials and art processes in a way that is not "pre-conceived or pre-determined."
If you bring ideas of "what you want to create" to art therapy you will place a barrier that will prevent you from experiencing the benefits that art therapy provides. Save your ideas of "what you want to create" for art classes or for your own artistic practice at home.
Based upon your needs and goals for counselling, the art therapist will create a treatment plan that will support the therapeutic process. The choice of materials provided may be linked to the benefits of the tactile experience, the connection to the senses, the kinetic responses, or for the visual impact (often all of these are combined).
Art therapy engages each individual in a process that allows for layers of exploration to occur, providing safe space and opportunity for you to gain insights and a deeper understanding of your life’s current context.
Art therapy also provides opportunity to challenge and define meaning that presents itself through the process stage, the finished artwork, and beyond.
