Do you talk in Art Therapy?
I love this question because it's a sometimes yes and sometimes no kind of an answer. The long and the short of it is that an art therapist will provide you with the opportunity to engage in therapy that uses interactions with visual images, art materials, art making process, and therapeutic conversation.
Art therapists focus upon therapeutic interventions with clients using art materials to engage and assist in the counselling process, which supports clients with non-verbal communication and working towards the client's self-identified goals for change.
The art created during art therapy essentially becomes a "third person" in the therapeutic relationship (client, counsellor and artwork) as it encourages thoughtful exploration of the client's inner self, in a manner that creates a connection between verbal conversation and non-verbal self expression.
